Dean’s List

WHEN Adam informed me that he has just received Dean’s List for his exam result, I am just beyond ecstatic…

Being an average student myself during my uni days, to see my only child obtaining Dean’s List for his Mechanical Engineering course was really a proud moment for myself.

It feels like our struggles and tears are being validated.

When he was accepted for mechanical engineering course I was a bit worried as my engineer friends have been telling me that it was one of the toughest engineering schools. In fact, the toughest.

Being in the communications and media field for more than 3 decades I know nothing about engineering. Apart from bits and pieces I learnt while dating a few engineers in my younger years…

But his achievement means a lot of things for me as his mother.

With his below average result throughout his primary and secondary school, it still devastating when he couldn’t go for some of the courses offered at some colleges and universities.

I remember that day vividly. As we were driving home after education fair in our home town when we were given devastating blow that he was not qualified for most of the fields that he was interested in, we both were crying. My heart broke into pieces seeing my baby in tears. In disappointment.

I told him that this was just the beginning of his long and bright journey in life and as his mother I will be by his side as long as I live. And I told him in my own tears that I wanted him to stand tall and took that rejection to motivate himself to achieve greater things in life.

I believe in him. Always. Since he was precocious baby boy/toddler terrorising his school mates I know my son have that potential of achieving something great. And I did tell him that and will continue to tell him exactly that…

Even though he didn’t excel in his study, being a non-pushy mother, I am very happy that he turns out to be a fine young man as in my mind I know that not everyone will be blessed with genius mind scoring in their studies.

I am just very blessed to have him as my son, responsible, mature beyond his age…

So just imagine my happiness when he showed me his Dean’s List certificate…

It shows my believe in him for the past 19 years is not just a daydream or a mother’s wishful thinking…

Indeed he has the potentials and he is showing it to his detractors now…

Granted, for some Dean’s List seem small or inconsequential, but it is a recognition of hard work and ability, and sometimes, that is just what my son needs after a difficult semester.

For a boy who have been praised for his good look and nothing else, it sure feels good to show others how wrong they are. That apart from being blessed with a good look, he is also a Dean’s List recipient too…

It is a reflection of what he has accomplished in term of coursework and I am sure it is nice to refer to in resumes for internships as Adam is about to embark in, come January 2018…A
